The Red Sox were not cowed by the Reds in battling them to a standstill, thanks to some all-time heroics in Game 6 of the 1975 World series that forced a seventh game won by Cincy in small-ball fashion at Fenway Park. But one of the heroes, Fred Lynn, points out that the Reds could have been as pinched as Boston was by losing one of its stars for the Fall Classic.

FRED LYNN: We played them tough, no question. We negated some of the things they did well. And we could stand toe to toe with them powerwise, which most teams couldn’t. I’ve had this discussion with Joe [Morgan]. If they didn’t have Bench or Perez in their lineup, think they could have beaten us? That Yankees team in ’78 was pretty dog-gone good. The early Baltimore teams were pretty good, too. What made those Reds teams really good is they played a lot of teams on their rug and they could use their team speed. Well, we didn’t have any rug and that place played slow. It slowed them down, no question. That’s the idiosyncrasy of our park.
